Our tips on how to hire the right person for the job.
Handypeople are great. They’re nimble, affordable, and useful for punch lists, hardware, drywall touch-ups, and small repairs. But they’re not your go-to for system-level problems.
When it comes to plumbing, electrical, HVAC, drainage, or anything with gas lines, always call a licensed specialist.
Why It Matters:
Insurance: Improper work could void coverage or expose you to liability
Permits: Many system changes require them (even if you’re not told)
Safety: Poor electrical work or gas line shortcuts can be dangerous — even deadly
Long-Term Cost: “Fixes” often mask the issue, leading to bigger repairs later
Rule of Thumb:
If it’s behind a wall, underground, or moves water, power, or air — hire the trade.
Pro Tip: Build a go-to list of specialists in your area by system. Bonus points if you ask them to walk the house with you once a year.
